This is what my tailor said to me about dry cleaning. I have never had a suit in this fabric before so I had zero experience to argue. I am always in a debates with them about breaks with me leaning to little or no break so that the trousers drape properly. I wonder if they said this to push my closer to their preferences.

I do agree it needs to be shorter regardless.
I find this comment from your tailor dubious at best. If your cleaners shrinks tailoring, you need new cleaners.

The weather in NYC has warmed up slightly from earlier in the week, but is still a bit below average in terms of temperature. My husband and I are having dinner this evening with friends whom we've not seen since before the pandemic, at a restaurant along the Hudson in the West Village. After being a bit under-insulated for dinner Tuesday evening (our table was a bit drafty), I've opted for my heftiest flannel three-piece suit, and a cashmere overcoat (albeit not the heaviest of my overcoats).

Included in this set of photos are some pictures of my newest indulgence, a black shawl collared single-breasted tuxedo from Paul Stuart/Phineas Cole, which I've styled with the four formal waistcoats in my collection as of present. (I'll be in the UK in about two weeks - addition(s) to the collection might be made.)

Suit - Brooks Brothers MTM
Shirt - Brooks Brothers
Tie - J. Press
Cufflinks - Deakin & Francis
Braces - Albert Thurston
Pocket square - Ede & Ravenscroft
Shoes - Crockett & Jones, model name Edgware
Overcoat - Adolfo
Scarf - New & Lingwood
Cap - Paul Stuart

Tuxedo - Paul Stuart/Phineas Cole
Waistcoats - Gold brocade & blue brocade - Favourbrook; silver jacquard - Polo Ralph Lauren; cream silk - Joseph Abboud.

The size of these turn-ups are giving me ideas I’m almost positive I shouldn’t indulge in, very cool!

2 inch/5 cm cuffs/turn-ups are the way to go . . .

They are actually a somewhat outrageous 2.5” , the joys of a Vietnamese tailoring experience.

Just wish I could get the drape right, might have the legs widened if that’ll help the flow

New flannel suit day for the first dress up of the year. Left some length for fabric shrinkage. Grabbed the least wrinkled shirt I found in a rush so there are better collars in the closet. View attachment 2312531 View attachment 2312533 View attachment 2312535 View attachment 2312537
Jacket fits nicely. Might I suggest a shirt with a wider spread collar and longer points, so the points would be under the lapels when the jacket is buttoned (perhaps one of the ones you've alluded to that's in the closet).

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
