On a related but independent point …

People think that what they see when they look in the mirror is an objective representation dependent solely on the impingement of photons on their retinas. It’s not. It’s the brain’s highly processed and thus subjective interpretation of that raw data. In truly pathological cases the subjectivity can be life-threatening—victims of anorexia nervosa, for example, truly see a fat person when they look in the mirror, while most of the rest of us would see a walking skeleton.

But it’s true of everyone, to some extent: people invariably overestimate the significance of what they see as their weakest physical trait and routinely overcompensate, sometimes obsessively. One of the best-dressed chaps here worries far more than he needs to over what he thinks is his large head, for example. And I’ve lost count of the number of posters who are convinced that their outfit makes them look taller when in fact it makes them look like someone trying to squeeze into clothes they wore as a teenager and had long ago outgrown.

Getting additional opinions from knowledgeable people is thus a rational approach to dealing with the unavoidable subjectivity of judging one’s own appearance, and is something everyone should do, at least occasionally. It’s one of the things this thread is useful for in my experience and one reason why a tailor who is both skillful and honest is worth every penny.

I only wish I had more pennies.

    Cheers,

    Ac

I just want everyone to know that I just accidently cut a chunk out of new tie from Drake's as I was opening the package.

I’m involuntarily cringing just thinking about it.

    My condolences.

    @black_umbrella , thumbed in commiseration.

If it's any consolation, I look in the wardrobe and see item after item which I deeply regret purchasing. It's like a 3D encyclopaedia of my continuing folly. Your ruined Drake's tie can at least be replaced.

I, on the other hand, can't just go to an online store and buy some wisdom.

That so sounds like something I would almost do.

    Sorry to hear.

Was it at least a non-visible part of tie? Please?

I think it's extremely catchy, particularly because of the mixture of color the shoes and tie throw in with it.

Far from a bland outfit, very appealing overall and nicely done.

    +1 Jesus praising.

Front blade, 4 inches from the tip. It's kinda small, so i might try wearing it. We'll see.

I have been that angry at myself only once before. Kids, never open packages while distracted.

I was so excited opening a package last year that I cut the tip of my finger off...a friggin' chunk of meat! I got blood all over the jacket...it was terrible.

Just hoping that makes you feel a little better....at least it was only a tie.

That tie/square combo = swoon, and the tone on those shoes is exquisite. [IMG]

Somehow the large gingham seems at odds with the rest of it for me personally, but love the tie. Who makes a patterned grenadine, assuming that's what it is?
