Other shoes would have lifted this. Now it only looks off.

I wasn't so sure about these shoes, but I was afraid black would make it too sombre/severe. What would you suggest?

Shoes r excellent IMO with that suit, just not with the black tie and the argyles and possibly not with the white shirt. chestnut shoe needs a lighter sock and non-black tie.
With that tie I agree with Anden that black shoe would b classic a la Bond

Elio, I think the shoes are fine with this suit. Black would work, yes, but that doesn't make your choice wrong.
