It was a joke, but the jacket is very loud, no?

    Glad to hear that.

I feel like we are going in circles. Yes. It is a loud jacket. It is also a beautiful loud jacket. If you're going to make a comment that you dislike something that is loud just because it is loud and for no reason other than that, this is going to be a long haul for everyone.

No problem with that. I'll try to refrain from obscure jokes. For the record, this again is cultural. Australians' favourite sport is taking the piss out of each other. It's all good fun, to see who can be the most sarcastic and who can take it the best and give the best comeback.
I have a lot of experience in the US, travelled a lot there, friends and relations there and even got married in Napa but I had forgotten your sensibilities were different to ours. We are more laid back while you are more serious and work orientated.
Nothing wrong with either, but just so you understand the background.
I wasn't trying to be nasty. If I'd made that crack on the Australian forum I would have got a bunch of laughs.

    There's an Australian style forum?

In the context of your whirlwind of a reentry to WAYWRN, and the fact that no one really "knows" you yet, its almost impossible to tell when you are taking the piss out of someone and when you are taking a piss on someone.

Spectre should start using smiley faces to indicate when he's joking. I have the same problem but in real life when I joke with a straight face and people think I am serious. :)

Fair point, it's just our natural default attitude in this country. The British are similar. Maybe the smiley faces suggestion would work.
I started a number if threads years ago so if anyone's interested they could dig those up although my style and thoughts have probably changed a bit.

It's a thread within this forum, just called Australian members, I think. It's very popular. I remember reading back a while Australians were the fourth most populous group on SF.

I for one roll my eyes when Spectre posts but I think there has been a little bit of overeaction from his last few.

Honestly, I don't know. It surprised me but they are a great bunch. I have regular lunches with several of them.
If you walked around Melbourne of Sydney you'd see the same disdain for good dressing as you do in London or LA but clearly there are a lot of people interested in clothes. Hard to spot them on the streets though

I had to start using the smiley faces, being a Pom and all...

I should have used a smiley face.

Because the Australian equivalent is mostly cut off denim (very) shorts and wife-beater vests. Rather light on pocket squares. And shirts.

Really? Not all of us dear heart.

I'd be concerned too about setting yourself up as the arbiter of all things good then ducking behind baseless aussie stereotypes when questioned. I like and agree with some of your points and disagree with others, I take issue with your dismissive approach though.

PS I liked the greyhound! What happened?

Which are perfect for your current "heatwave" where you're all fainting because the temperature has rocketed to 28 celsius. :):)
