    My recommendation, having rented gowns for 15 years before finally splurging on my own, is to buy now - a career's worth of rental would buy a few of your own. Now I struggle under 10lbs of my own wool and silk.

    The knot is on the large side but not egregiously so, it's just exacerbated by the relatively short collar points.

    Oh I own mine; it lives in my office and makes two appearances a year. Alas, owning it doesn't make it any lighter or more breathable. I really envy the more open regalia associated with northern European universities--they let some air in!
