Indecisive morning. Feeling like this isn't working as well as it did in my head. Oh well, try again next week.

would this work better if the shirt was just a solid color?

I just wanted to note that in this picture we may be inclinded to look at the fit of Luftvier's shirt, but I think the best thing about this shot is that it shows the rise of his trousers. For what seems like a long time now, the trend has been towards lower rise pants, but I'm struck by how good the higher rise looks. I don't know if the lower rise trend has been the side effect of a casual, jeans-wearing culture, or not, but in the context of tailored clothing and full suits in particular, a higher rise just looks more 'right' to me.

Anyhoo, I know this topic has been discussed before and that it is a personal preference thing, but it's what I thought of when I saw this picture. What are the thoughts of others?

Manton, do you object to the PS absolutely, or only in this context?

Nothing wrong with a solid knit tie over a patterned shirt -- a solid knit over gingham is a classic -- but, in this instance, I'm not feeling the shirt. A square that better integrates the shirt would help.

I'm with you. Low rises, of the hip sitting sort, work awkwardly with ties. Wear your coat buttoned and shirt tends to show above the belt. Wear your coat unbuttoned and the torso looks stretched out.

I am a fan of the higher rise myself. I like the look and find it more comfortable. I have tried lower rise pants, but I am always pulling them up becuase they don't quite feel comfortable to me.

I am on Team Sack with Lufty today. (Hmmm. I think there may have been a better way to express that...) High-rise trousers and everything.

I think a solid square would be a better option here, due to the patterned shirt and knit tie making for an "active" feel here. Adding a square with another pattern makes a little too busy for me. I love the tie man, really good color for that suit/shirt combination.

I really like this combo. The square is great. Also, it is the oddest picture I've seen in a long time. You look like you are about 2 inches deep.

Opposite for me. I enjoy both looks, but pants to my navel don't feel quite right on me.

Thanks, Matt. I am, in fact, trompe l'oeil. Seriously, though, I blame the iPhone. If Spoo can blame it, so can I. :)
