3.75" ties are too wide? That's crazy talk :)

FWIW I'm on the short side at 5'8". iPhones engulf my palms like the TR-107 Tricorder Mark 1 (ask Doc).

The Garrison lapels, at 5 inches, are definitely larger than is classic. It's a fun piece for what it is.

I have a Boglioli where the lapel is 3", and this Borrelli that measures out to be about 4". Most of what I have sticks to that range. The recent Chan I posted is about 3.5".

    UC -
I like all the items here - I think it's a lot of brown though. Maybe a green tie could liven it up a bit?

I have been experimenting with tie width the past few months. I am pretty much exactly Urban Comp's size and I've come to the conclusion that for me 3.25 to 3.5 is the proper 'timeless' width for me. Meaning anything thinner just looks silly on a gentlemen older than 30 and 3.75 is perfectly fine with the right jacket but a bit wide to be the 'sweet center' of my tie wardrobe.

I'm probably getting rid of most anything thinner I've bought over this year and I'm leaning towards going back to 3.25 in general. I feel just a little bit 'overwhelmed' in a 3.75 but it's far from 'out of whack' - particularly with a nice wide lapel such as Urban Comp's.

I think the trick is to focus on what is appropriate for you and your build, and the jacket. Slimmer ties one day, wider the next. It's all about the perfect mix.

For me, UCs fit rocked, spot on.

I'm 6 feet and scrawny and typically stick to no more than 3.5. I'll do wider with a sweater or a vest, but 3.75 or more flapping around on my chest feels like I'm wearing a flag.

You wear sweater vests? I don't believe it. No fair isles, pray.

Good call, I didn't even notice that until now. How much will that cost do you think? Other than the lumps, what do you think?

I have been getting my ties made at 2.75" and cut very straight to the knot. I think base width makes little difference. It is all about the bottlenecking. I have had ties that were 3.75" at the base, but looked skinny atthe knot... I have been getting my lapels and 3.5" and stright ties to 2.75". I think these proportions look very nice and timeless. I like a slightly smaller tie than lapel. Just my opinion. FWIW, I am about 6' 2" about 190ish.

I'm a 38-40 short and 3.5" lapels is pretty much perfect for me, with a 3.25-3.5" tie. But I like the fun of different looks. Some days I feel like being Steed. Without the hat & cane, of course. Perhaps when I'm 45.

I might have to try it.

Does it matter that I do not wear a tie with my SC's? Since I do not have a tie to add some color to the ensemble, I usually wear a tattersail shirt, or something similar.
