Well, I generally wear oxfords with suits and derbies otherwise. I don't wear oxfords with odd jackets accept by accident, but I do wear derbies with suits from time to time, especially if the suit is what I think of as a casual, summer, or weekend suit.

Oxfords, particularly galosh-style oxfords, are descended from dress boots. The early 20th century move toward informality in shoes seems to me to have proceeded more slowly than the move toward informality in tailored clothes. So, the oxford shoe descendants of the dress boot kept their black-in-town attributes while the casual lounge suit more speedily replaced morning and evening clothes in town. Thus: lounge suits with oxfords, a combination that is itself a stopping point in the disintegration of the formality of Western dress.

Why fret over this, though? The proliferation today of brown and other sundry colors and materials in an oxford shoe make them problematical for the city anyway if your tastes run toward harrumphing...it's a short jump from a brown, buckskin oxford to a dark brown stitch cap derby. And it might be a good jump to make if it fits your personality.
