OK - so I just got home from trying out to be a contestant on Jeopardy and wow, what a sartorial disgrace.
They are here in Phoenix doing tryouts, so I went and stood in line yesterday for 2 1/2 hours to take the pre-test, which I aced.
Got invited back this morning to take the 50-question contestant exam. Out of 1,200+ applicants, only 250 or so invited to return and probably 80% of us were male.
We were instructed to dress as we would on the show. So I wore my Joseph Abboud 3-button navy suit, blue Nordstroms button-down, pink Geoffrey Beene tie and my cordovan AE McCallister's. (I'll put a pic up in Men's Clothing shortly).
I have to say, it has been a long time since I have seen so many men in highwater pants, white socks, really ugly loafers, slip-ons, ill-fitting suits, etc. I wonder if this is what a Mensa meeting would be like
Unfortunately, you don't get to be a contestant based on how well you dress and I didn't do well enough on the test to make it to the next step. About 20 people were invited to stay to play a practice game and then from there, some of them may be chosen to go to Los Angeles to be on the show.
It was fun though, so I'm glad I went! And I did get to shake hands with Alex Trebek last night. He looked very sharp, pocket square and all, although he was wearing black tassel loafers with his suit.
