Yeah. It was an editing and directorial mess, but it broke a lot of visual ground and was way ahead of it's time.

    And...

In the same vein. While not underrated or unknown as it is a huge cult hit, there probably are a few kids who haven't seen it.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!

I love love love this movie. I mentioned it in the "movies I watch over and over thread" and then picked it up at the video store over the weekend. The actor who plays Martin is excellent, but overall the production values are pretty sketchy, so this is one movie that I think I'd like to see remade.

Pontypool. Maybe it's well known but I never heard of it before it randomly showed up on Netflix.

Not underrated, but somewhat forgotten ... LA Story.

Steve Martin's magically realistic look at life in LA.

I love that movie. The freeway sign that offered love advice? Genius.

    Very creepy.

LA Story: Sarah Jessica Parker before she began her transformation into Richard Simmons.

Well regarded, but seldom seen - Lee Tamahori's Once Were Warriors.

Tamahori's first film it suffers from a lot of low-budget first film problems, but it introduced Temura Morrison to a North American audience and cemented him as one of the most frightening film characters of all time - Jake "the Muss" Heke.

Bombed at the BO, Astaire hated it, and it was Steve Martin's first film after The Jerk. Why his agent let him do a depressing dramatic musical set in the '30s is beyond me. But it had a Dennis Potter script and Christopher Walken tap dancing. And Pauline Kael loved it.

    Pennies from Heaven.

Might be unknown to some, the best "big chill" movie (if you don't count Beautiful Girls) according to me
    Peter's Friends (1992)
