High school graduation

My high school graduation is coming up and I want some ideas on what to wear. Our school does the black cap and gown. Our school traditionally has really high profile graduation speakers (we could be getting one of Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerburg or Ellen DeGeneres) so I want to stand out in a picture with such a high profile person.

I already have a pair of black captoes that I will polish with all my heart before graduation and I was looking for suggestions for a shirt/tie/pants combo.

Our school colors are red and black, but red shirt/black pants generally tends to look horrible.

Just personal preference, but I would not wear anything too strange to stand out. I would wear a solid white shirt and add some color into your outfit with a tie of your choice. Again, just personal preference.

Keep in mind that you won't see much of your attire with the gown on. I would pick a tie that stands out, paying close attention to making a stellar knot, and a shirt contrasting the black gown. You might save the sport coat for later, if you intend to wear one, as those gowns can be warm. Best of luck and congratulations on this milestone. Because you are on this forum indicates to me that you are interested in how you look. Pay attention to what SFers are wearing and the best stuff is quite pricey. The point, get a good education which typically leads to a good job so you can afford to fill your closet with fine wears!

+1 on hot, depends on part of the country and size of school.

Unless in a nice air conditioned room with spaced seating, every graduation I had I wished I hadn't worn pants.

I'm going to say closed gown but I don't really know what you mean by open/closed gown. Basically all that can be seen is the collar, a bit of the tie, some of the sleeve, pants, and shoes.

I'm just look for subtle ways to stand out. I have a pair of grey trousers that I am thinking of wearing since it will be summer and these pants are pretty light.

I'm just looking for some a subtle way to stand out and look well dressed with what I'm given. The guy who won 'best dressed' last year wore a collar pin on his shirt which was subtle but I thought it was pretty cool.

I'm just looking for ways to look different but in a good stylish way. Some ideas I've been thinking of are wearing a knit tie or a grenadine tie or finding a some cool vintage cufflinks and wearing those.

I wore a Whitesnake cut-off t-shirt with dress pants. Closed gown = go crazy.

I'm gonna have to agree. Who really cares. You'll have a gown on anyway and your outfit won't really be visible. I remember my HS graduation. It was indoors and still felt like a sauna. You're gonna be hot. Dress for comfort here. It's not like Steve Jobs will be there scouting for future employees.

Correction! I am a little younger than that guy.

Anyways, how detailed is this photo going to be? ( group or close up)
If it's far away enough most detail will be a waste regardless of how good it looks.
And also, to add to what they've been saying, you really just want to look confident and collected. If you're drowning in your own sweat that would be difficult. Keep it light!

For shirt, white always contrasts very nicely with black. It's simple and classic, and won't ever look bad. Dove gray would be about the only other thing I would try. The harshness of black can be unforgiving, and you want a nice, classic look if you actually plan to look at these pictures in the future for anything but a laugh.

Gray trousers would pretty much be a must- charcoal or medium gray, your call.

Tie? Maroon. Darker reds look wonderful with black, and white or gray are neutral colors for shirts that will work with just about anything. I keep thinking of it as the perfect tie for many occasions in the threads here involving what tie to wear, but I have one that's absolutely perfect. 3", Maroon with small yellow and burgundy diamonds. A reasonable idea of what you're aiming for.
