Herman Cain's victory in the Florida straw poll yesterday advanced the cause of style in men's dress. He is probably the only major presidential candidate since Harry Truman to regularly wear double-breasted suits that fit him decently (the coat, anyway). Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that neither nytimes.com nor washingtonpost.com could be bothered to make Cain's win the lead story on their politics pages. U. S. journalists adore only a front-runner. Meanwhile, at the Congressional Black Caucus's Phoenix Awards last night, our esteemed President advanced the cause of slobwear by wearing a dinner suit with a four-in-hand tie. Last year, he attended the awards wearing a black bow tie with his tux.
