Henley Collar?

What is it?

I was in Neiman's looking at a Loro Piana Pullover with a standup collar and zipper that went a 1/4 down the front. The sales person called it that but i didn't question him.

He was holiday help. A Henley collar is a collarless garment with four or five buttons from the top. We normally refer to what he showed you as a zippered mock neck.

The salesman was wrong. I believe a henley collar is in fact a collarless shirt, with a button placket that goes 1/4 to 1/2 way down the front. It is often made in thermal material for layering in winter.

I think i get it.

I've seen shirts (not recently) with a collar that is like a half inch tall and button down. The collar would stand up as opposed to being rolled down.

Either that, or is it just a no collar top with buttons like thermal underwear (like the other poster mentioned)?

Can anyone post an example?


Also, is there an opinion regarding a 1/4 Zipper front these days? I really think this cashmere top is pretty sharp. I'm not a big zipper guy, but think it looks ok.

I have always thought they looked horrible, and unfortunately during the grunge era they became more than underwear when such style icons as Eddie Vedder wore them under their flannel logger shirts. Anyway, I really like the 1/4 zip and full zip sweaters that are popular now. I have been looking for them for a long time and unfortunately it's only when they trickle down to the masses that I can consider buying one in merino or cashmere, so I will probably snap up a couple this season. Unfortunately the ones I have found in "medium", as I was ranting about earlier, have all been 48-50" in the chest, about 6-8" too big for my taste. I wish "mainstream" designers would get it through their head that sizes are supposed to mean something.

I generally agree Henley shirts don't look good, but as is true for every garment, it depends on the fit and details. I think one such as done by Christopher Bailey for Burberry looks relaxed yet stylish.

I agree color reporter, that one looks much nicer. However, dont you guys like to have some sort of buttoning, so that you dont have to shave your upper chest? I hate having to do this. I dont have someone wax me everyday to do photoshoots and runways, unlike that model.

Shave? A good generic term for this type of pullover is 'semi-open'. It covers all of the variables.

I think henleys look good when worn with the right clothes, ie jeans, shoes etc.
They look good on rowers. who originally wore them didnt they? I think rowers are the ones who originally wore them. I may be wrong on this.

But are henleys the same as grandad tops?

Properly used for rowing - hence the name 'Henley' after the town of that name 'Henley on Thames'.

Thus a sporting shirt now adapted for social purposes.
