I usually wear a size 43 Euro / 9 UK, and sometimes I need 1/2 size bigger (43.5 or 44 euro) but I recently ordered a pair of formal shoes (Paul Smith) in size 9 that were massively larger than usual! They were noticeable bigger (longer) than several size 10 uk / 44 Euro shoes that I have! I now have to return the item and pay the pstage myself so...

I s there any hidden rule that classic shoes run larger or is it a totally hit and miss affair?

are you talking about sneakers/trainers? in general, sneaker manufacturers size their shoes wrong. if you wear 9UK in sneakers you probably wear an 8UK in dress shoes. 8UK will also likely be your measured size on any standardized foot measuring device.

Generally my size is 43 euro / 9 UK, regardless, I have most shoes and sneakers in that size. The exceptions are usually a size bigger (44/10 uk) hence the bizarreness, a size 9 shoe that is noticeably bigger than the size 10's I currently have.
