I was driving in upsate NY in the middle of nowhere trying to make a redeye in NYC and I hadn't seen a car for 100 miles. Literally not one car. I'm cruising at around 75 in a 65 trying to make good time back to the city. Apparently it dropped down to 55 and a state trooper picked me off and claimed I was doing 80 in the 55. I say yes sir and no sir and play dumb. I've never had a moving violation but he doesn't let me go. I suppose he shouldn't have.

A few questions:

Should I plead not guilty and string it out?
How much with this ticket likely cost? The DMV says 6 points, but I'm wondering how much cash.
Will it affect my insurance even though it's my first ticket?
Should I just pay it?

back in the goold ol days (a few years ago), my friends and I inevitably racked up any number of tickets while traveling upstate to hockey games. We'd always write to the DA in the issuing town with an apology and an assurance to keep a more vigilant eye on the roads and our speed, and then some story how it'd be difficult to take time off to travel to court so if there was anything he could do to reduce this, blah blah.

My last 80 in a 65 was turned into some lame non-moving violation with a marginal fee and no points

I don't know if DA's are like that any more.

I don't know if NY is a state where you can fight a ticket by mail but if itis I'd string itout as long as possible and they will eventually drop it.

How did they catch you? By radar gun?

Take a defensive driving course will shave 4 points off your record and reduce your insurance rate by 10% for 3 years. You can take it online for $28.

Don't bother fighting it. Your only real chance of winning is if the officer doesn't show up. Ask yourself---is it worth the hassle of driving back to a court there and waiting for up to hours to speak with a judge?

From personal experience none of this matters. Even if you have an airtight argument, no traffic judge will give a ****.

Write a letter to the DA and ask for a reduction. Worked for me, got a response in a matter of days.

Are you a NYer? It depends where but in most upstate counties you can negotiate a plea to something that isn't a moving violation, so you pay (and they get your $) but no points. If you PM me where upstate I may be able to give you more specific info.

Often pays to reach out to a local lawyer, if the points mean a big increase in your insurance premiums.
