We will be going to a nice, somewhat higher-end NY party in a San Francisco hotel. It's certainly not going to be formal or black tie, but I still want to wear something more than jeans and a t-shirt. I want to wear this jacket:

I also want to wear a lilac/pinkish tie and perhaps some darker jeans than those in the picture. I'm not sure about slacks as I kind of want to keep it somewhat casual (thoughts on that?). And that's where I'm stuck... Would the tie work with the jacket? If so, what kind of shirt would you recommend? Color/style? Dark jeans or slacks? If slacks, what color? Should I scratch this idea entirely? If so, what would you wear? Thanks guys!

I vote for taupe or olivish wool slacks.

Hmm, interesting. If I abandoned the lilac tie, could I go with burgundy-ish pants? I feel like the lilac/pink tie would clash with the reddish pants, right?

Burgundy might work as well. Can't tellyou about the tie without seeing the whole get-up.

Very unlikley that a lilac or pink tie would work. That coat has a very earth tone vibe. I don't imagine it working very well with bright colors.

Hmmm... I kind of like lavender/lilac with browns (earth tones).

I'm curious to know what a "higher-end NY party in a San Francisco hotel" looks like.

How do you find shirts that flatter your neck shape (or lack thereof)?

I'm not sure if I'm a big fan of the tie + jeans look. I think you could wear that jacket with jeans and an open collar shirt, or wear trousers+tie+odd jacket, but there something that is a bit too fashiony about the tie+jeans look which doesn't always work for everyone. I'll grant you that it can look good on some, and won't right it off out of hand... Perhaps post a pic of your various ensembles for comment??

What would you choose? I have a pretty limited "collection" of nicer clothing... mostly business casual stuff that I bought before I joined the forum.

Hmm... I may do that.
