Hello! After tons of lurking, I finally have a good enough reason to join and post: I am getting married and am trying to get all the knowledge I can on how to make my outfit look right. My suit is picked out and altered, and I am now working on white shirts. The first has barrel cuffs, the second has french cuffs. I prefer the latter, but I am worried that the sleeves may be just a tad short.

Barrel cuffs:

French cuffs:

French cuffs shirt only:

Note: these are not my suit pants.

So, please educate me on my cuffs. Are the jacket sleeves the correct length? What, if anything, needs to be altered with regards to sleeve length? Thanks!

The French cuffs and the jacket sleeves both look a little bit short, but they are the right length one relative to the other. If we assume you must wear one of these two shirts, I would strongly recommend the one with the French cuffs, as the barrel cuffs only emphasize the short jacket sleeves.

Thanks for your input. How much too short are the sleeves in your opinion? 1/2" ? 1/4"? Is the sleeve length of the barrel cuff shirt correct? Can my jacket sleeves be lengthened if my tailor has already shortened them?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
