Hi all,

I've just purchased a grey nailhead suit with brown buttons and button-hole stitching. I picked one with brown accents on purpose, as it is one of my favourite colours, but one that I rarely wear in a suit-setting.

I am having trouble though, matching the suit to some shirts and ties. Particularly on account of the nailhead pattern. Here are some pictures of the suit:

Here are some examples of the style of shirts/ties that I like:

I intend to wear this to a wedding and out for dinner at a nice restaurant. For the former I was thinking a plain white shirt (?), and for the latter I was considering something patterned.

Any ideas? I just need some help getting a feel for this ... I think I will catch on though

Lovely looking suit. Links 1 and 3 are most complimentary as far as the shirts go. Pairing it with a darker solid tie of navy or dark espresso brown would be most excellent. The deep burgandy tie could be nice as well. Although the suit doesn't have a strong pattern (especially from a distance). Wearing a check shirt and patterned tie could be a bit much. Textured solid are nice as well ex. herringbone. Stay away from the yellowey colors or the pinks that you included IMO.

A perfectly nice suit... W/ regards the shirt: I'd go w/ door #s 4 or 5. A bold blue is always a reliable counterpoint to the ennui of brown.

I like lilac and purple with my browns and greys. I tend to wear a lot of lilac/lavender in the winter. My issue with the last shirt is that it may look too busy with the nailhead pattern of the suit.

Blue is always a reliable colour for a shirt and it goes with pretty much everything.
Lilac, mauve and pink and also great colours, albeit regarded by some as being a bit more daring.
A lilac, mauve or pink shirt looks fantastic with a grey suit.

I have a grey suit in a birdseye check weave, which is quite similar to a nailhead weave.
I often wear a pink or mauve shirt with it.
I also wear shirts with small checks - a white shirt with black and grey microcheck, or a white shirt with a red and blue microcheck would look very good with that suit, in my opinion.

As for ties, you can wear a large variety, particularly if you like dots or small patterns.
I really like the look of a navy or black tie small dots in a contrasting colour, or perhaps a tie in a basketweave with contrasting colours in the weave (such as gold and navy).

The suit looks nice - enjoy wearing it!
