Help! Removing shoe polish stain from pants.

I just noticed a shoe polish (brown Meltonian cream) that rubbed off from a freshly polished pair of shoes onto the inside cuff of a pair of light gray suit trousers (100% wool). What's the best way to get the stain out? Thanks, h_s.

Photos would have helped. A damp soapy terrycloth gently rubbed over the area should do the job. No need for harsh chemicals.
