I'm in my upper 20's and work in an industry where I am required to wear suits daily. I used to wear brands such as ted baker, robert graham, ferrell reed. My ties had alot of big flowers and paisleys on them. I am wondering a few things:

1) if ties with with bright flowers and pailseys is considered classy and acceptable to wear?
2) Which style ties should i be buying? which brands should i be buying?
3)are flowers childish? are paisleys "old man looking"?

I was never such a fan of classic stripes and subtle plaids...not sure what to do????

Please advise!!

Versace does some nice patterns. Drake's are very luxurious. Just get some nice high end names on sale. I have a red Zegna I enjoy.

As for patterns if you like paisley stick with it. Some guys like monochrome ties so they look like minimalists/assassins. Some old BB yuppie guys swear by little boats and anchors and ****.

It's all good. Dont fret. :)

I might not be the best person to answer this, but I'd say that wearing paisley is a matter of personal taste - I am personally not a fan, but thats a decision you have to make. I'm also a little bit of a snob when it comes to ties I like (I admit it), I like E. Zegna, Canali, Drakes, Charvet, Isaia, Brioni, TF (made by Zegna), etc.... You can look that up - theres an abundance of information on best tie brands. They can be had at reasonable prices either on the bought & sold or at places like Neiman Marcus Last Call or Nordstrom Rack - you just have to spend some time. In the early days of my style adventure, I bought cheaper ties like BB, and I have to say, they disgust me - the knot they tie is a knot for pansies - theres no drape to it, so I don't have a large tie collection (cost prohibitive), I just have a lot of ties I like a lot, and knot very well.

I personally like pin dots, solids (grenadine), stripes on my ties - I don't venture too far out from that, 4IH, with a perfect dimple in the tie - always. Its a nod to conservative style with the patterns, a nod to style with the dimple (and 4IH really), & a nod to being young with the 4IH. To me, bright flowery ties are okay, if you're interviewing for a role on Hawaii 5-0, but thats just my opinion, every time I see someone with a flowery (especially bright) tie, i want to do them a favor, and burn it. I am not a plaid fan for my ties, but they're acceptable. I've considered paisley with a nod to classics (subdued paisley, in a solid color like burgundy, navy, dark purple etc).

No animal or novelty ties, ever. Since you wear suits everyday, I'm assuming it's a conservative industry like banking. Start with plain ties in navy, black, purple, burgundy etc. Then branch out to pindots and stripes.

What is your role in the industry? Sales? Administration? How conservative is the company you work for? How long have you been in the industry?

I find Ferragamo ties gross, personally, just feel them, they feel really thin. No experience with gucci. For suits, it depends on your budget, at BB-level quality, I think Suitsupply is a better buy at a lower price (same quality). If you can go up more, Paul Stuart / Samuelsohn (samuelsohn make for PS) arent bad.
