I happened to come across a very simple and thin Tom Ford polo. Now although I spend a decent amount on clothes, I do get to a point as to where I see it being pointless to go any higher. Personally I have never went past spending 400 for a shirt/sweater or 300 for pants/jeans. Anyway, this Tom Ford polo was $1500.00.... I figured that I had to try this on and hope that I either get a skin orgasm or women just start randomly stripping in front of me. Anyway, I compared it to the 548 (Saks Fifth brand) light polo that I had on and paid about 50 bucks for. Both were 100% cotton. And actually the 548 felt better to the touch in regards to quality. I'll admit that I probably don't know how to really tell pure quality of a shirt so I consider my the voice for the average person. But also, it fit me a lot better and looked a lot better. I pretty much noticed the same for everything Tom Ford that I saw. That makes them worse than Gucci in my book. I buy Gucci Shoes purely because they "look" better than a lot of things. Not all Gucci Shoes but some. But a lot of their clothing I don't like and the price is outrageous. Anyway, what am I missing here with this super high priced clothing makers? I know people knock on Gucci but not so much Tom Ford.

Super high priced clothes like Tom Ford are purchased by people (at full price) who have an utter disregard for money and dont put a second of thought into it.

It's a hugely expensive version of a lifestyle brand, my homey. And the lifestyle is being rich enough to pay $1,500 for a polo shirt.

Life is very good for some.

Not to defend that $1500 polo you saw, but Tom Ford is kind of a genius designer. So a lot of what you are paying for is his talent.

Analogy: The oil paints in a Matisse are only worth a hundred bucks or so, max.

Unless Tom Ford has used his genius talent to create a revolutionary new polo shirt, you're not paying for anything but the name and his minor variation on something that was perfected long before he took his first breath.

I'm not a hater of Tom Ford -- I rather like some elements of his design philosophy, but there is no polo shirt on planet Earth worth that money unless it's made out of some of extraordinarily exclusive fabric.

That's why I kind of disclaimed the polo shirt. That's there for the folks that SpooPoker mentioned, the kind that head to Hermes because they need some new socks. I'm talking about stuff that had to be designed, such as suits, outerwear, ties and squares, etc. What I mean to say is that Tom Ford is not like Kiton, which is simply expensive -- Tom Ford offers items of exquisite taste and beauty that are simply unavailable at a lower price point. Like I said, I'm not talking about socks or cotton sweaters or polos or whatnot. Obviously your mileage may vary depending on your taste -- See: Thom Browne.

After seeing how some of TF's suits fit OTR, I think they are worth $4K. Polo for $1.5K?! Hell no!

This is exactly right. Tom Ford is an amazing designer who designs very high-end clothing for people who want the best fashion and know good style.

That may be true but it's not the point though is it?

How much of TF's allegedly genius design talent went into 'designing' a polo which as the bloke above said was perfected before he drew his first breath. It's made of cotton, a non exclusive fabric even in it's most richest form. No matter how much you might admire or revere him, you'll have a hard justifying to a thousandaire like me that any polo shirt is worth anywhere near that kind of dosh.
