I will be graduating in May with a BA in Finance. I will be working with a small manufacturing company that is in the metal stamping and tooling industries. The company employs approximately 40 employees. However, my boss has requested that I define my own title within the company based on the work I will be performing.

I will be working with the Controller of the company and assisting him with the financials of the company. I have presented the titles of accountant, financial analyst, and assistant controller, but my boss said he wants something more specific. The kicker is that I will also be involved in handling payroll, minor insurance work, and minor employee benefits work. In sum, I will have responsibilities and duties that span from the financial aspects of the company as well as some human resources with more emphasis on the financial and accounting side.

I'm hoping I can get some thoughts on what would be an appropriate and proper job title for my role in the company. What do you suggest?

How about Office Manager since it appears that you will have your hands in areas other than accounting? It's kind of strange that the title wasn't defined beforehand. Congrats on your upcoming graduation.

Just call yourself "Head of ___________". You want to be the head of a department. Even if you have to make it up.

Trust me. I was in a similar position once, and it's a unique opportunity to become more responsible/important/respected/whatever. I ended up calling myself the head of my department when I had the chance to grab some power. After our company moved/closed, I got a job that paid over 3x more for quite literally the exact same work I was doing. I can attribute it directly to the title that I made up.

Good luck.

Associate, Finance and Operations.

When you present this to your new boss/hiring manager - explain why you selected it. "Associate" indicates your support role for the controller, Finance and Operations refers to your actual area of responsibility.
