Dear Folks:

This is the label of a riding coat in heavy navy blue wool, made by Huntsman for a huntswoman.

The label has lots of numbers.

I am guessing that the first ones show a make date of July 21 1958, but what are the others?

Are they a client identifier? I know some shirtmakers mark a shirt with a client number, but every other English coat label I have seen only has a client name and make date.

Any help appreciated.

The label:

Posters on the London Lounge have suggested that the initials may be those of the cutter, Huntsman's Brian Hall. Other houses (like Dege) also include the cutter's initials in the client label.

Hall was also the Huntsman figure who traveled to the US (where I got the coat). You an read about him in Richard Anderson's recent book.

After I posted here and on LL, I also did the obvious thing and emailed Huntsman. I await their reply.

I don't know squat about the label, but I'd love to see the coat.

My guess, would be the same:

21.7.58 - the date, 21st July '58
2276/1 - customer number; 2276th customer, first garment
BH - cutter's intials
926S - ???

I believe the 926S is the cloth batch used.
