short is the rage right now, but longer is more classic and will stand the test of time. go for just abovethe knee
absolutely NO zippers (please dont buy one of those awful button coats with a built in zip up vest looking thing permanently attached inside)
i stay away from belts... makes it look like a bathrobe
single or double is your choice.. i like single.
i also like very fine herringbone in grey as it helps to hide any lint

Avoid black suits and overcoats at all cost ! Black suits normally convey cheap, shady used car salesman, chauffeurs and morticians ! If you absolutely want black get it with pin stripes. They conducted experiments at different high end hotels to see which person with specific color topcoat the doorman would open the door for and people with the black topcoats were the ones they least opened the door for while with a beige or navy blue topcoat it was close to a 100% !
