Hey guys! I've been told by a few (mostly female) friends that I should pay more attention to fashion, since I dress like I'm at a funeral (wearing all black) and I mismatch my clothing colours a lot. I never knew that mattered or I was getting anything wrong... so I read a bunch of articles and posts here, went out and bought some stuff based on that (which is way out of my pitch black comfort zone) but I still have no idea what goes with what and what doesn't. I've never even bought/worn shirts before.

People have thrown colour theory and colour wheels at me which sends my head spinning. Can you guys help me figure out what colours of these clothes I bought goes well with other parts, and what doesn't? I'm thinking all this colour theory will make more sense when I see it with the clothes I have in front of me.

Here's a photo of me a few years ago. I'm wearing a uniform for work in it, but the red hat, red t-shirt, red jacket was/is a look I thought looked really cool, which shows how fashionably backwards I am and how much help I need, haha!

Here's what I bought, with photos of everything:

    Shirts
    • Red/navy gingham
    • Burgundy
    • Navy
    • White
    • Grey denim looking

    Shoes
    • Black barefoot high top
    • Brown barefoot chukka
    • Brown boot
    • Olive nubuck oxford
    • White leather Converse

    Jackets
    • Brown goatskin leather jacket
    • Black quilted jacket
    • Grey denim jacket
    • Khaki linen jacket

Normally I would throw any of this stuff on in random order without thinking about the colour of the clothes. Can you help me not do that? And if you think there's anything I should throw into the mix, like a winter jacket, another colour shirt, please let me know!

    Thanks in advance!!

Hi dude, thanks for the reply. I've been given the colour wheel before, but as in my first message, it really confuses me and was hoping for someone to help with what matches amongst what I have and what doesn't. Would give a better example for my confused mind than the colour wheel alone.

Oops my bad, must have been caught up scoping your new clothes and missed that part. Blue button up, green chinos, brown boots. Black jacket.

Thanks man. I'm still quite confused, would you (or any other people reading) be willing to help me with my whole set up if it's not too much trouble? What goes with what, what doesn't? I'm REALLY bad at this :(

Frankly, you're asking too much. This is the kind of situation for which image consultants have clients (albeit a consultation most likely would cover more than just coordinating existing items).

To give a brief answer and not address everything...
Shirts and pants should not very similar in color. For example, don't wear black with black. (Unless there's another visible layer involved).
Don't mix brightly colored shirts with colorful pants. That's one reason why yellow pants are hard to wear.

Also, the Converse should be reserved for the jeans and maybe the skinny gray chinos.
