So I spent the last two years pissing my life away. Due to clinical depression and various long-term health problems (mono, recurring strep throat infections, tonsilitis...the list goes on), I've had approximately 0 motivation to do anything except drink my troubles away on the weekend.
As a result, I'm going into my junior year with a GPA of 2.44. I'm not an unintelligent person. When I occasionally get a compulsion to actually work, I do very well on my assignments. I'm still struggling with depression, however.
I'm getting a BA in poli sci and philosophy from a private top 30-ranked university.
How can I get a grip on my life and actually get a job when I graduate? Starting to really freak out now...

If you want a job start networking now. Its the only thing that will offset your grades. Ohhh and of course start working on your grades also. If you can demonstrate that you shaped up the last two years then it is better than having a consistently average GPA all through college.

In general, though, I think that having a balance between physical/intellectual activity is a must. So, for example, getting out and play a sport, work out, take a fitness class, etc. is something that is ALWAYS good for you. Beyond that, getting more involved in what interests you... clubs, campus organizations, getting a job, etc. might help.

I can't agree more with the physical activity advice. After starting grad school in a new place, I was incredibly lonely, overworked, and stressed. The second semester I made a decision to go to the gym a couple times a week and it saved my sanity. It's difficult at first, but invaluable in the end. Also, my only regret about undergrad was not joining any clubs. Take advantage of first couple weeks and make sure to look into a club.

Do what all mediocre liberal arts students do:

1) Swear to get your scholastic act together.
2) Jack off for the next couple years.
3) Internship.
4) Graduate by the skin of your teeth.
4) Apply to jobs.
5) Move back into parents' house when you receive no callbacks.
6) Find work through temp agencies.
7) Get cancer from smoking.
8) Die because you had no medical coverage.

Good luck.

Actually, this is great advice. You would be surprised what you can find.

It was the perfect springboard for my career in publishing. Temp -> Editorial Assistant -> Developmental Editor -> ???

I'm currently working on #7, but #8 may be difficult to accomplish given my employment status.

Stop drinking. Seriously.

It's a huge contributor to depression, the inability to concentrate and lack of motivation. Not to mention an enormous waste of resources.

take a couple of years off, join the army, you'll come back with a lot of energy, or, with a hell of a lot less. one of the two.

but, seriously, consider taking a year off and gaining your strength and motivation. and there are worse things than joining the army for a few years.

Four years in the Air Force was one of the best decisions I've ever made. After I got out, I had health insurance and college paid for, skills, a security clearance, and a resume. I've been working government contracts on and off since then, taking time off in between to do school or whatever I'd like. I've seen the world, and had good times. Highly recommended. If you're interrested, drop me a line so I can help you be careful... ie. not being stuck with being a cook or something.

J, that's excellent advice and your service definitely should be applauded (as should your willingness to help out other members) but did you see the above posts? The original poster is a troll, just trying to get us to waste our time. Check out his other posts.
