I'll be a wedding guest on Saturday. I have a grey suit with a black vest and a grey bowtie. What i don't have is the shoes. I'd like to get those brown shoes i saw recently. But, brown shoes, does it fit to all that i'm wearing. Or should i get black shoes?

Please help!

Thank you very much in advance

The only appropriate choice here would be red shoes. Bright red. Red.

I am thinking of leaving out the black vest. But I'm not gonna give up the grey bowtie. I never wore one, so that'll be fine. What about the shoes, does anyone have any idea, black or brown?

In all seriousness, for a wedding I would recommend black shoes. On the other hand, you probably want to buy shoes that will also work well for you on future occasions, so take that into consideration when making your decision.

According to classic style guidelines:
- evening event -> black shoes
- formal event -> plain (black) balmoral aka oxford

So black.

Or if you want to really make an impression, go with patent leather.

OTOH - and as ljrcustom - you might want to get something you'll get a lot out of even after the wedding. That said, a pair of plain black balmorals would be a good choice, if only because every wardrobe should have one.

Hmmm, this sounds interesting. It seems it's not so appropriate to wear the brown shoes at weddings.

@ ljrcustom: exactly, this was in my mind - taking the brown shoes and using them afterwards instead of keeping them in the closet.

So then go with whatever you feel you will get the most use out of in the future. That's the best advice that i can give you. Or you can always just say ******* and buy two pairs of shoes that way you will have both options for the wedding, and for future occasions. Good luck with making your decision.

Oh yeah, one more thing: depending on how strict on style issues the hosts are, wearing grey to a wedding could be considered a faux pas. In the olden days, grey was reserved for the groom, his father, and the bride's father, if they so wished - all other men were expected to don black suits.

Blimey, even as someone who advocates Morning Dress at weddings, I wouldn't suggest that grey is inappropriate in this day and age.

Personally, I love brown shoes with grey, but since this is a wedding I say buy some black bals. Avoid patent leather unless you get invited to a lot of weddings or formal events- if not, they will probably just collect dust in the back of your closet.
