I am looking to spend no more than $400, preferably less than $300, if possible.
The style isn't too important, although it should be lace-up and I do rather like the uninterrupted lines of a wholecut shoe. Most important is the colour, though. I like very rich browns with an almost wood-like look to them. Light or dark, it doesn't really matter.

Can anyone throw out any suggestions?

I've actually had my eye on those, but I think I'd prefer one without the medallion.

The AE Westgates don't get a lot of love on here, but they do come up on eBay occasionally so you can't beat the price.

I suggest emailing Plal. Mr. Doshi used to stock a version of the Weymouth in the past that didnt include a floating medallion. Crockett also has a wholecut called the Alex or something, ZJPJ owns a version, from the benchgrade line that can be had for $320 from the same vendor.

Here's a shoe that was recommended to me by a very reliable source. I haven't seen them in person but am giving them active consideration at $395.:

If you want American shoes, usually Alden does nice ones.

Yanko from Spain has also been recommended to me under $400, available at SkyValet in Washington, DC.

You will soon discover there are TOO MANY brands!

I've also been looking at the C&J Dartmouth, but in some photos the colour looks a bit flat...
