Help choosing tuxedo, or do I just wear my suit?

All,

I've done some reading, but I need some help. I'm a 30 year old in a part-time MBA program and we have a "black-tie optional" event coming up with 600+ of our classmates. Since I am organizing the event, I felt like I should do the black-tie thing and go with a tuxedo.

After doing some research and looking around, I decided I would like to buy a tuxedo if possible because with my build I can't really find rented tuxedos that fit well at all.

I found saw this D&G tuxedo and I really liked it, but can't find it anywhere.

Alternatively I really want something that is slim fitted, but I am just not sure where to look in Chicago and what designers may make something that would fit me well.

Right now the best fitting suit I have ever owned is my Theory one, which fits perfectly and has a very nice trim look/fit about it. So if I can't find a tuxedo that fits similarly I was thinking of just wearing this.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

If you really consider buying this "thing" in the picture, I'd rather go in a suit. This "thing" is the ugliest tuxedo I have seen - almost worse than Neil Patrick Harris' outfit at the 2010 Emmy Awards. With the non-existent lapels it seems somebody took a real tuxedo and castrated it.

If you wanna invest in a tuxedo, then buy something more timeless and classic: One button, peak or shawl lapel. This does not mean it has to be an old man tuxedo...look for example at this Phineas Cole tuxedo:

Anyway, for $2,695 you can get something much nicer, which you still can wear once you have your part-time MBA without getting fired should your boss see you in it.

That's not a tuxedo. It's not really not anything, other than ugly, and tasteless.

If that is the only option you are willing to consider, then to with a suit.

you might also consider actually shopping for an real tuxedo.

If guy in that D&G Tux and guy in that Phineas Cole Tux got into a fight who would win?

Trick question - there wouldn't be a fight. The sight of Phineas Cole Guy would make D&G Guy pee his pants and drop to his knees to beg for his life, because D&G guy is a whiny pansy douche while Phineas Cole Guy look like he'll f#$k you up if you so much as to even touch him without his permission (all the while maintaining his class and hair still perfectly neat) .

While I wouldn't call it the ugliest thing ever (the resolution of the picture really kills it), its not much in the way of a tuxedo, and really, if you want a tux you want something a lot more traditional than that. Black Tie is all about tradition. The Paul Stuart affair that was posted is very nice, though I prefer smaller lapels. Shop around a bit, hell, at that price point, even look into having one made-to-measure or even bespoke.

If you are genuinely interested in buying these tuxedoes, why not try to send them an email at: http://store.dolcegabbana.com/cms/he...tskay=9BEC955A

You mentioned that your resident is in Chicago, IL. You should also contact Neiman Marcus, Sak's Fifth or Barney's New York in Michigan Avenue. Well, Barneys New York is actually located at Oak Street. Even if they don't have these exact same tuxedo available, I bet they do NOT have problems making an order for you because of the price that you are willing to pay.

Be aware, GQ will suggest what it's advertisers sell. Thus, Glen O'Brian find himself in stuff that has a maximum age of 25 all the damn time as a job requirement.

EDIT: And we at MC tend to scoff along side the Clark Cables and Cary Grants.

Agree on the shirt. I love spread collars, but the Phineas Cole "cutaway" collars are too dramatic for my taste - especially with a bow tie.

I actually love the way Phineas Cole cutaway collar looks, but would wear only with a tie.

And with a bow tie, of course narrower spread would suit better.

Gosh, those Lapels are gorgeous.
