Big thanks in advance for your comments: I am 6'1" tall, weigh 165lbs, and normally fit in a size 41 long and have a size 31 or 32 waist. I am considering purchasing either the Brooks Golden Fleece 2 button or the Hickey Freeman Madison 2 button in solid navy or charcoal. I will have to purchase the suit online and thus would appreciate any general recommendations you might have (fit, quality of materials, color etc.)? This will be my first suit. Is Brooks worth the $200- $300 difference? Cheers, E. P.S. 24-28 Sept. 2008 is Brooks Friends & Family Sale 25% off using code: friend69

Quality wise, I think they are both comparable. In terms of fit, you need to try them on yourself. But both GF and Madision are American cut (meaning a bit of boxy)

Hickey freeman does have Barrett and Vanguard models that are more of European/Modern cut that you might want to try them on at your local stores.

With that drop, you may be better off doing MTM with either the Golden Fleece or HF. I think both are a drop 6, and you sound like you have a 9" or 10" drop. Have you looked into this option?

I appreciate all your replies. Excellent advice regarding MTM. It would be of help to me if someone with similar dimensions to me 6'1"-165lbs - shirt size 15.5"-34-35" (EU 39) - Chest 39/40" (tape measure under arms) - could post their sizing in Brooks or HF or Polo - I am thinking 40L or 41L - Thanks.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
