Help! AE to C & J Size Equiv.

I have several pairs of AE Park Avenues in size 8.5 D that fit very well. Please help me understand the C & J (337 last) equiv.

I am confused by this because I have read that you go down a half a size from US sizing to UK sizing, not a full size.

So how come you guys are telling him to go down a full size?

What is the method to the madness here?

Carefull here I am size 10 D in Park Avenue and I take 10 E in Weymouth. They both fit me fine.

That was my understaing too half size down but then i heard recommendations from PLAL to go one full size. In the end I acctually tried on 10.5 US size Weymouth and then emailed C & J asking them what is my british size. They said 10 E.

The 337 is a VERY roomy last. That is why it is recommended that you go down a whole size rather than a half size. Size conversion is not as formulaic as one might hope. In my case, a whole size down was still not enough on the 337 last. However, a half size drop might be enough on the 348 or 341 lasts. Just have to try one on to be sure. There is no magic formula for determining your correct size.

One of the styles must be marked wrong...or one is tight and the other is loose.

Well....yes. One is an entire size larger than the other. The lasts are very close as well...so yes.

Well, no. First, UK shoes are 1/2 size smaller than US shoes. Brannock chart. American shoe makers may tend to produce stubbier shoes than the English (meaning that if you like your size in an American, you might like a half size down in English). If true, it does not explain away that technically, a UK size is exactly 1/2 size smaller than a US size on the Brannock device. Imperfect as it is, the Brannock device is the only worthwhile objective measure of shoe size. Second, unless your foot is a perfect match for a RTW last, you can choose to fit your ankle, your arch, your toes, etc., to wear or not wear insoles or pads, etc., and so forth. It's possible to wear a broad range of sizes across different makers and have roughly equally good fits on all the shoes. And boot, balmorals, blucher, and loafer styles might fit the same foot different enough to produce 1/2 size changes in sizing. I think it's important to mention this because noobs are often misled by one man's sizing conversions. What works for one person may not work for another, and the idea that there is a meaningful consensus on sizing conversion is useless if that conversion does not work for you.
