Don't get a real SLR unless you really want it.
If you want to drop some money, the canon G10 (or G9) takes some great photos, shoots raw, and has a nice lens with a wide range. My pro-photographer father doesn't bother with the SLR for non-work shooting--he just grabs the G9 or G10.
I have a canon eos SD1200 and it is pretty sweet for being crammed into such a small package. The shutter lag is low and there is no shutter lag if you are prefocused (hold the button halfway down to focus and it will take the picture as soon as you press it fully).
