I'm thinking of picking up some Japanese Raw Selvedge denim that weighs 21+ oz. I know most Raw Selvedge is in the 12-16 oz range. I'm wondering how the heavy weight denim compares to the lighter in terms of:
-comfort
-texture
-fading
-appearance

Overall, just wondering how members here would assess the pros and cons of lighter vs heavier raw Selvedge denim.

Thx

Once broken in, it's very comfortable !

But don't size down - if they're too tight or shrink they're agony!!

They fade like normal denim...

The weave is wider than low oz denim

Go for it!:)

Comfort:
This is more dependent on the specific denim that you pic than just the weight. For example, the IH21oz is extremely comfortable and has a good drape from the start, but my 32oz N&F or sammurais 25oz, are a PITA to break in. Now they all feel fantastic once you do break them in, but so do all jeans.

Texture:
Again, this one is different depending on the specific denim. heavier weights will lead to less irregularities as a general rule (less nep, more minimal slub, but hair stays the same) and a lot of the time will be a dash more "rough" simply because it uses larger threads, but all of these can change depending on the denim being used

Fading:
as a general rule, heavier weight denims have a higher tendency to create higher contrast fades because creases set better, and there is more resistance while moving around. That can, once again, be changed depending on the dyestuff used and how well it holds onto the fabric.

Appearance:
Not realy sure what you are asking with this one unfortunately. A lot of high weight denims dont drape too well and are a pain if they are tight, but that is realy the only thing affected by the weight.

Ultimately what it comes down to is, there are general trends followed by high weight denims, but all of this is much more dependent on the specific denim than its weight.

I have jeans from 8oz to 21oz, but I just live in the 21oz pair until they Have to be washed, because they're such a pain to break in again..
