heaviest practical weight for a suit for business

what do you think? 13 ounce? 14? 16?

I get to places like moscow and oslo on a regular basis, and I like to walk and I don't like to be cold. on the other hand. most places are heated.


so, what do you think? I'd hate to invest in a really nice 17 ounce suit and never wear it because it was too hot.

14-16 ounce can be OK for winter in those climes. It very much depends whether you will actually be working in a modern aircon/heated office in which a lighter suit would be FAR better with a decent overcoat for when you go outside. The days of cold offices have now long gone and so to have the heavyweight suitings that were fine in them.

Even in Hong Kong, if I am going to work in summer, I will still choose 12-13oz for any decent business suiting. I will only consider 16-17oz as the 'heavy suiting'

A lot will depend on your travel to work pattern, how comfortable you are doing things like taking you jacket off in the office and, indeed, what control you have over your office's temperature! I would agree that 13oz should be fine in most circumstances and, as befits a vintage enthusiast, often go heavier.

i think 16oz should be heavy enough. anything heavier would not seem to be practical.

I just wear it, 13oz has virtually little heat difference to 9-10oz, Never really get into lightweight cloth.

Even compare to fresco?

HK or East Coast summer has this suffocating humidity and heat that I can't stand as a Californian. will try to get as much breathability as possible

I wear my 15oz fresco, fully lined jacket and quarter lined trouser, I probably sweat a mild amount on my shirt but definitely don't cause any discomfort indoor. I actually find wearing wife beater and short will probably sweat just as much than wearing a open weave or linen suit with a boater (straw hat).

I live in Toronto and have a herringbone tweed suit 16oz and a navy wool 14 oz which is great for 0-10℃ , I wear a coat on top of it < 0℃ .

I have a 16 ounce double-breasted suit arriving in about a week. I am excited to see how it turns out. It seemed lighter than expected at the fitting.
