Headphone Jack on laptop not working properly!

I thought it was worth checking here, seeing as some of you might know more about computers than I do, and my searches online to find a solution to my problem haven't helped.

The headphone jack on my laptop doesn't work when I'm trying to listen to music on iTunes, wmp, etc. But when I go to device manager or whatever to test it, I can hear the *ding* sound. So it works, but it's not working properly. Does anyone know why it's doing this and how I can fix it?

Restart your computer yet? Also, do you have Vista?

It's been restarted several times, and it still hasn't solved the issue.

And yes, I have vista, but I've had it for over a year (in which it worked). I reinstalled vista recently, which is when it stopped working.

I know there have been issues with Vista audio after something was installed (updates maybe? I don't remember fully).

Google for a patch or something like that.
