HDMI vs DVI

On a 22" inch monitor, is the difference between HDMI to DVI really that noticeable that it warrants purchasing the cables? I feel that even going from VGA to DVI their doesn't seem much difference.

There is no video quality difference between DVI and HDMI. Exactly the same connection.

hdmi is video and sound whereas dvi is only video

Yep, that's what I heard. HDMI is the all-in-one connectivity miracle we've all been waiting for. My understanding is that more and more entertainment appliances have HDMI ports. Especially the newer DVD players and computers, so they can hook up to the flat screen TVs.

Going from VGA to DVI makes a big difference. The digital signal generally results in a much crisper image.

I have a 32" Samsung TV that I don't use:

It's this one.

The instruction manual says that I can use this Samsung with a PC ( as a monitor ) connected via a "D-Sub cable", or connected via an "HDMI/DVI cable". And both set ups would require separate audio cabling to achieve the PC connection. None of these cables are supplied.

To you electronic guys:

1: Would/Should this Samsung work well as a monitor?

2: Which cabling option is preferable?

In a general sense, I think HDMI is worth getting just because it seems to be getting traction/wide adoption, one cable for Dolby and video, and it has the bandwidth for higher than 1080P resolutions in the future.

Just so everyone knows - HDMI is a digital signal.

Therefore even if you believe in audiophile mumbo jumbo - there is no reason to pay more than like $14 for a six foot HDMI cable.

I cannot believe that places like Radio Shaq are selling their cheapest ones for like $40. What a RIP OFF!

Lucky for me, Fry's has them for $11.99 usually.

Yeah, I think I got a 25' one online for about 20-30 bucks. The last time I priced them at best buy (just for kicks), the longest they had was something like 8' and cost $99.

I can't even imagine what a 25 foot cable would cost.

The only issue you'll have with a "cheap" cable that long is sometimes the digital throughput isn't enough to handle a true 1080p signal, and a couple of ones and zeroes might get scrambled occasionally in the line. But if you have quality components on either end, that effect is usually unnoticeable because the encoding and decoding process will sort that out for you. That being said, there are several manufacturers out there who's stuff is rated and HDMI certified. I hear good things about Monoprice, which is available in a 25' length for $40 online.

Compare that to the Monster Cable version, which goes for $299 retail.

There is no reason to buy it.
