Have you ever used collar extenders?

An appalling idea, it will dreadful. Buy some new shirts and don't show yourself up.

I tried this and as suggested by GBR, it was not a good idea. They are best used when the neck is tight, not when the shirt neck size is woefully small for your neck.

If you cannot button the top button, then get new dress shirts and wear your shrinked down shirts open collar without a tie on a more casual day.

I've got one of these, it's obviously not ideal but it works as a last resort for a shirt with a collar that's a bit too small (due to a slight MTM measurement error).

So from what I gather, it's not ideal but good to have for emergencies or if you're too stubborn/"practical" to throw out your shirt or lose weight.

I used to wear them w/ a few shirts, getting a smaller neck size is a way to get slimmer fitting shirts, but you can only push it so far obviously. This button trick is great idea. Kind of a "duh" moment for me, actually.

If you do this too much though, the collar can end up asymmetrical, and shifted to one side, because you obviously can't also move the button-hole a corresponding amount. The elastic of the collar extender allows both sides to separate equidistantly from the center-front.

Seems from the responses this is a lot of fuss for a small change. Just get some new shirts.

I know it sounds easy to just get new shirts, but some shirts aren't so easy to replace if you spent a decent amount of cash on them, so I say make the most of them.
