Oxford Cloth Button Down; remember, "button down" refers to the collar and not the front of the shirt.

Oh, don't worry, I'm not saying I'm a style bore - that path leads to incidents such as those in the OP where you alienate people with obsessiveness. Conversations go where they go, and more often than not, while they may start with style, they end up a long way away. [IMG]

My wife yelled at me last night because while I was watching Jeopardy I just couldn't get over the champion's knot/collar. It was atrocious - large windsor with a narrow straight point collar.

I attended a meeting last week of all 150 or so people at my level of management along with everyone above us all the way up to the Pres/CEO. The dress code was billed as "business comfortable" whatever that is so most folks were in polyester polo shirts, Nike trainers and their best Dockers. I wore tan RLPL wool slacks, a spread collar white shirt (ties strictly forbidden), AE Sanfords in burnished chestnut and a Harris Tweed SC in honor of the impending season. Top level management gave me a number of compliments on my appearance.

People at my level were mostly confused as to why I'd wear a suit. :brick:

OTOH, my brother in law has a girl friend who has discovered that he will accept and wear items that she thrifts for him. While her sense of style is dead on, unfortunately, they have not yet learned about construction and quality so some of the items are not quite to my liking but ...whatever, eh? I was invited to accompany him to my alterations person to have some of her purchases fitted to him. He put himself completely in my hands so I suppose I must be doing something right.

Hah...my mother in law and I are currently watching Family Feud and critiquing the various contestants' awful, obviously just purchased TV wardrobes. Steve Harvey is no great shakes, either.

I know I'm far from perfect myself, so I try to keep lecturing/snark to a minimum, but I must admit I kind of cringed when my little brother (your typical engineer) told me he had bought a black suit and silver coloured tie (I could do with the black suit, but I detest silver coloured cloths).

I didn't actually say anything to him though, as I think it's an asshole move to do so. If he thinks it looks great I don't want to take that away from him by being snarky (and it's not like any of his colleagues dresses better anyway).

I knew I was far gone the time I was watching some pundit talking on a PBS show, and I stopped listening as I recognized the collar roll on this OCBD as Brooks Brothers.

    Very bad.

That made me laugh. So far, the only detriment has been to my wallet.

I don't think anyone here has ever advocated for explaining the different between a suit and an SC when that comment is made by a hot girl :brick: :brick: :brick:

My sister has been happily married for ten years next weekend. One night ten years ago, her girlfriends went to a bar/club to hook up with guys and dragged her along; she had a headache and didn't want to go out, so she went in sweatpants and a sweatshirt so that everyone would leave her alone. At that bar/club were a group of guys also looking to hook up; one of them also would rather have stayed home, so he wore sweat pants and a t-shirt with paint stains. Four months later, they were married. Both are style-conscious people who normally dress the part.

I always remind myself of that story when thinking about how clothing can drive all manner of relationships. Appearances do matter and I don't deny that, however, sometimes they end up mattering in a way that is different from what you might expect.

Wow! Their whole relationship is a big cliche! Very awesome story though.
