Have you ever dated a woman that was one step ahead of you mentally?

The situation is pretty much the exact opposite for me. I am very good at formal exams, and there are few people who can claim to have more school credentials than me. But I am still pretty dumb and many of my gfs have been more intelligent than I am.

e has almost as many school degrees as me, is smarter and makes more money than me. So I don't even have that going for me like you do. I still don't know why she settled for me, but I am not complaining.

That you're too ignorant or stupid to "understand modern art" doesn't make it a universal condition.

I've dated a variety. Usually with their own strong and weak points. Some super creative and artsy which can be kind of intimidating (especially when they're actually good) but maybe not super book smart, some extremely intelligent and book smart (but maybe not as witty or socially cunning), some funny witty and street smart but not all that advanced taste wise (music/art/literature/movies/etc...).

There are a lot of combos out there. Hard to believe people haven't dated someone who was a step ahead of them in at least one of the mental aspects out there. I mean, the thread title is just mentally. I didn't know it was an SAT score thing. People still living off that high school badge of honor?

There's a singular understanding?

Also, I think it's a bit silly to relate an appreciation for art and intelligence. I dated a girl in high school that absolutely hated art, but she was without a doubt very intelligent.

Are you "smart" enough to actually buy some of that art, you gullible fool? Introduce me to that girl! Oh, and I have a bridge to sell you. LOL.

"An object of art is an honest way of making a living, and this is much a different idea from the fancier notion that art is a scam and a ripoff. The bourgeoisie have, after all, made it a scam. But you could never explain to someone who uses God's gift to enslave that you have used God's gift to be free."

wife is smarter than me but doesnt realise it. perfect scenario really.

the worst thing is girls who think they are smarter than they are and challenge everything you say. i find most of this highly intelligent girls are just over opinionated on issues where there is no clear right or wrong.

....I actually don't consider Basquiat on the same level as the true conmen of modern art. Certain things take skill: Photorealism, Land art, Cubism, Metaphysical, Expressionism, Surrealism, Sculpture, etc. This is "art", and this is work. Spatialism? ie: Razor blade in a canvas. It's called vandalism. Minimalism? ie: Lines on paper. Neo-Dada? ie: Junkyard & crazy glue Lyrical Abstraction? Color Field? She's right. A 3rd grader made it, sucker. Duchamp's Dada toilet? A painted black square? If THIS is what you're calling art, you're a fool. Make sure you eventually sell it to a greater fool, and pat yourself on the back. Just like Lars of Metallica did.

It's called a "bubble" investment with zero intrinsic value. Make sure you sell it to a greater fool, and pat yourself on the back. Just like Lars of Metallica did.
I take it you are not a fan...

I was disappointed in SFMOMA, but that might have just been bad luck. It was a week or two after the Warhol exhibit closed and a full third of the (unimpressive) building was closed. Permanent collection one floor, so-so photography exhibit on another. The only area that still sticks out was the Sherrie Levine room.

What you're describing, apparently, is craft, rather than art. Also, lols at "modern art is a joke" rapidly becoming "okay, modern art that I don't like is a joke."

It's an absurd argument in any case, as you don't seem to have grasped my original point - it was not that she disliked modern art in particular, or some artist I enjoy, it was a complete cultural disconnect. She saw no value in any art, really - except that the Thomas Kinkade prints she had would totally double in value and look good above her mantle.

A woman who'll argue with me about the value of Russian Suprematism is boner material. The woman who exhibits no interest whatsoever aside from Know-Nothing petulance is not.
