I'm not talking about a formal, on-paper name change. Did you go by one name growing up, and now go by another? Prefer your middle name to your first, or vice versa? When did you decide to make the change (college, first real job, etc?). How or why did you change? Do you think some names are "more professional" than others? I've gone by a few different names and nicknames, but I think I probably need to settle into one pretty soon.

I know a couple of people who changed their names: 'Slutz' to 'Raven', and a women who married a guy named Pitt & changed her first name to Avacado

. Strikes me as very weird.

As to the OPs premise, the people I know have ususally dropped a childhood nickname and decided to go by their real first name. This seems to occur in college or upon entering the real world. Know one guy who started using middle initial w/ his full first name, and then went to first initial and full middle name ('Chris' to 'Christopher P.' to 'C. Putnam')

I thought about legally changing my name because my parents screwed me with a very weird variation of how it's pronounced but, in the end, I didn't. Anyway, I know you said that's not what you're asking about.

My sister's ex boyfriend went by Joe but his real name was Matthew. Joe wasn't even his middle name. Everyone calls my grandmother Helen but her name is Angela.

Growing up, people called me Bobby. When I changed schools in the 8th grade, I told people my name was Bob and it's stuck ever since. It wasn't exactly a deliberate name change, for some reason I felt it sounded better. I think when I leave school and find a job, I might change to Robert for work situations.

From grade nine to grade twelve pretty much all my friends called me Stazy (not Stacey with a "Z" sound, more like Stazzzy). I go by my first name, Paul, now.

I always went by Joey, Joe, or one of the many nicknames that I've had growing up. Then a few years ago when I left college and entered the work force I started using my full name, Joseph.

when I was 19, I changed my name to a really stupid name, and right before I got married I changed it back, because my wife really hated my new name.
