I was busted for this two days ago. First time in quite a while. She was neither amused nor supportive. [IMG]

My wife and I have only joint accounts, so there would be no point in trying to hide something from here even if I wanted to. Like all of our finances, my clothing purchases are built into the budget.

    +1

My wife encourages me to get nice things as long as it's equitable and she gets stuff too. The only problem is that I'm able to find better deals most of the time.

We both know that once we have kids, the clothing spree will cease to exist, so we are stocking up early [IMG]

    Did she vow revenge?

The girlfriend doesn't mind so much for me. I honestly don't buy that much though and her dad's idea of dressing up is a Tommy Bahama shirt and the good flip flops so she likes it when I have to wear a suit to work and what not.

Wife: Responding to a congratulatory letter--"When did we become Saks' Platinum Club memebrs?"

    Me: "Huh?"

    Wife: "Nevermind."

    Me: "Huh?"

Perhaps neither amused nor supportive, but she couldn't have been shocked, right? You wrote a book on the subject!

I guess I'm a very lucky married man...... My wife had the idea before we got married to have joint accounts, but also keep a separate "kitty", presumably so she could buy things without me knowing the price (she collects sterling flatware... I don't even want to know how much she spends!!). I also have a wonderful mother-in-law who loves me in a good suit (dad's an engineer who buys clothing at Sears!)

I'm a photographer, so I spend quite a bit on lenses and things, and it's become easy to justify a new suit to her as they still cost less than the lenses!

I also quit smoking, so the money I was spending goes directly to my wardrobe!

I got nailed a few days ago getting a pair of those RL Gifford Chukkas that were recently discussed here on sale. I hid the shoe box and it was discovered.

You couldn't call it 'research' or 'marketing materials' or something like that? Come on, man - show some ingenuity! [IMG]

Then again, God help me if my wife ever finds all my perfume stashes. She would so hurt me.

I'm amazed that this is an issue for so many. What business is it of theirs what you spend your money on? Unless it's money they've earned and you are kept men, but I doubt it somehow.

Our model = we both work and have our own bank accounts. A set sum from each gets paid into a joint account monthly to fund joint expenditure (household; kids; holidays etc.). I pay more than her as I earn more. What's left is ours to spend as we wish.

I realize it's a quaint notion, but I believe each partner in a marriage has an obligation to be financially accountable to the other.

I always disclose and get her opinion. Then make sure I buy something for her, too.

Last night she helped me chose between the C&J Wigmore and Westbourne.

In a general sense I'd agree - there is an obligation not to run your finances into the ground. Accounting for individual items is another matter however.

I don't buy very much, really. and I dont' hide anything.

a few years ago, I bought 2 pair of vass shoes, when I was in Budapest. I really shouldn't have, because money was tight, but I got a bonus, and hadn't bought anything for myself in a couple of years, and needed shoes.

anyway, I hadn't gotten out of the shop when my wife calls on my cell "DID YOU JUST SPEND 1500 DOLLARS ON A PAIR OF SHOES?" "no, I spent 1500 dollars on two pair of shoes". it didn't go as well as I might have hoped. the credit card company called my home to ask about it.
