Reading you post, it doesn't sound like you know quite what you want; something in the minimalist or modern vein. This is fine, of course, but I strongly urge that you research your available options extensivly before purchasing pricy pieces.

Iconic designers and movements can be easily studied on the internet through Wikipedia, museum sites, and design sites. I don't intend for this to be tedious process, its more so that you can familiarize yourself with what you would like to buy. If you need a place to start, I recommend looking at the Bauhaus school and branching off from there:

I believe that buying furniture is not simply buying a piece of furniture, but rather it is buying aesthetic philosophies, identities of a time, and the lifetime contributions of great minds.

Checklists! You speak my language!

Thanks...I get what everyone else is saying, I won't commit to anything too pricey and I do understand that my tastes will change...I just want to settle down and enjoy the place I'm at...I'm sick of college dorm/ craigslist furniture, and I really won't have any to start with once I get a place of my own.

By zen apartment....I'm thinking of the following design cues:

1) all natural materials used (no synthetics, no plastics)
2) simple shapes that are comfortable but lean (no plushy sofas)
3) most colors in basic wood/earth tones (no bright, loud colors)
4) Nothing elaborate (e.g. fancy wood carving)

Try looking at greenteadesign.com and see if that grabs you....

Just buy cheap right now. Why would you want spend money on some crappy apartment? Save your money, and then REALLY furnish your actual home. Not saying you should stick any furniture in your apartment, but you really can find cheap classy furniture if you look around.

I would say unless you are are maxing out your 401k and your IRA you should probably hold off on wasting money on extremely expensive apartment furnishings. Get some stuff from Ikea-- that will be fine.
