I/we don't have/use this term. But, what I read through the fora it describes all the "Trad" stuff like Alden's, Kenmoore wingtips, Florsheim Imperial etc. ...
A “gunboat shoe” has a heavy sole (preferably double or triple), usually an extended welt (storm welt, Norwegian or Goiserer),
is built on a short, stubby last (which has its stubbiness even more accentuated by the wide welt).
All shoes that fit those criteria are “gunboats“, be they American, English, Austrian or Italian.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck…………it is a duck!
