I'm toying with the idea of adding a hat to my summer accessory collection. The issue with that is I am a student and I mostly wear polo's and t-shirts. I have looked around the forum and most hats are being worn by members in more fashionable clothing than shorts and a t-shirt. I really like panama hats but I don't know if that would work with something so casual. Thanks for the ideas.

Yeah, in my experience the only hat you can wear with a t-shirt is a knit cap of some kind. I don't know about "slouchy", though, that's a little hipsterish and doesn't look as good as a straightforward knit cap IMO.

I guess you might be able to pull off a flat cap, but it's hard to tell without knowing you. You have to be able to wear it with confidence or else you'll just be Hat Guy to everyone who knows you.

If you wear a boater/fedora, it implies that you collect swords, consider yourself "fun" and "quirky", and engage in lengthy arguments on line regarding video game piracy.

Check out the Lacoste Pique Polo hat. I love this hat, although it won't get much lover here, being ballcap style. But it's made out of the material that the polos are made out of, so it breathes a lot better than most ball caps.

In the alternative, I like bucket hats/cotton trilbys, too.

Singy fedora, casual straw, all sorts of caps. Ivys, newsboys... I don't think I would go panama though. Stick to a rougher texture like a milan straw. Plenty of good vintage ones cheap on e-bay. And ignore robot on fedoras. They may take a little panache to pull off these days, but they're hardly the sole domain of antisocial geeks these days (I say while sitting in my room on SF on a friday afternoon while wearing one). The easiest fashion hat for summer would probably be ye old linen or cotton ivy. Nice entry level ones here: http://www.villagehatshop.com/ivy-caps.html
