Has Lands' End's quality declined since they were acquired by Sears?

I'm referring to both the clothes sold at Sears and what you would order by mail.

You are taking a leap implying there was ever much quality there to begin with. At that price point, I wouldn't expect too much. That said, I did notice some very nice ties at Christmas when I was doing some appliance shopping. I was very tempted to buy one.

Yes, it has declined.

And I disagree with Gnatty in that the quality of Land's End clothing, at least in the late 80's, was quite good.

It's possible that it declined before the Sears acquisition, but what I have seen in the stores since then is nowhere near the quality I used to get from the company.

I've always thought that LE is a JC Penney's house brand. I remember seeing their shirts a few years ago.

I tried the half-canvassed sportcoat, but didn't like the cut. The fit was extremely awkward on me, and so back it went.

LE still has some decent stuff from time to time. My favorite knit tie came from there. And the return policy can't be beat.

I don't think that LE items are a bad deal when on sale.
As Doc pointed out, their ties can be quite good.

I bought a pair of black and white houndstooth check trousers from LE on sale for $39. I don't wear them much, but at that price you can afford to indulge in something that only gets occasional wear.

Also, they sometimes stock quality items - remember the Lands End/Alfred Sargent frenzy of late 2007?

Anybody have any experience with their lightweight "year round" (I think they're called) wool pants? Since Costco no longer seems to be bringing in their "Fancy Pants" anymore, I been considering the Land's End offerings as an option.

I bought a couple of their "Picante Red" cotton slacks at $19.95 apiece last year, also a wool tie for $24.95. Both seemed like outstanding values at those low prices.

About ten years ago I was heavily into LE. I was just getting above the level of (ironically enough), department store clothing. In the last couple of years, I have bought one or two LE OCBDs that were just too deeply discounted not to buy. I have found that compared to some time ago, the shirt tails are greatly reduced, buttons cheaper, and the stitching does not seem as good.

One of my favorite sport coats, to this day, is an LE lambs' wool, black, with red window panes. It is a great cut on me, 1/2 canvassed, and goes great with either odd trousers, chinos, or jeans. I got it on sale for $80 about six years ago. I took a shot on another coat last fall. I was fairly disappointed.

I have some older LE stuff (six or seven years) that was unworn, passed on and tailored for me (a gift from relatives), and even after three or four years of wear and tear it's better than what I've seen recently.

It's not hard to imagine that quality has declined when it's been taken over by a company that's as poorly run as Sears is, but the only differences I can confirm with certainly are in the buttons on dress shirts (really, really cheap plastic now that is worse than what you'd see on $50 INC stuff at Macy's) and the stitching on the blazers/sport coats appears to be pretty shitty.

What Costco fancy pants are you referring to? Most Costco clothes don't seem very good (at least in So. California Costcos).

What would be the new budget choice for conservatively styled clothing, then?

Lands End started with excellent quality sailing clothing. That quality continued well into the early 80's when you could still purchase high quality deck shoes, "Breton Reds" and other traditional sailing apparel. After it lost touch with it's sailing legacy it began to change. It became just another BD and polo shirt clothing catalog IMO.

Costco used to have some pretty good wool trousers for $50. They were pleated though. If they were flat front I would have bought a bunch. The fabric was nice.
