I feel as though beards will always come back, and the clean shaven look will always be a standard. Anything else will probably fare the same way, just with longer intervals between when it is accepted and when it is discouraged. Why carve outdated designs into your face when the clean shaven look is the easiest to achieve and the most timeless.

I've got a beard right now, I need to trim it down. I've been experimenting on and off with beards or stubble for a while, and now I'm thinking I'll keep it. If it works with your face and you can grow an actual thick, even, and symmetrical beard then it's great. But if you've got some wispy ass **** going then lose it.
