Has Crockett & Jones Ever Made a Wholecut Shoes in the 348 Last?

The closest shoes to a whole-cut that C&J currently makes in the 348 last is the Hallam (cap-toe). Does anyone know if the company has done a whole-cut 348 in the past? On a related note, does anyone know where I can buy a C&J Hanover? It seems to have been discontinued. The Hanover is made in the 337 last, which is similar to the 348:

There are no plain wholecuts in the current Handgrade line, C&J will however make one for you MTO.

Finally in my opinion the 337 is nothing like the 348

+1

The C&J 337, depending on your tastes, is either more stodgy/bulbous or classic/timeless/elegant compared to the C&J 348.

I suppose you're right, but I was just saying that the chisel-toe shape is similar (though wider).

Too bad about the Alex's only being MTO. I'd be looking for one below MSRP in a size 10 UK/10.5 US.

I thought Plal used to carry the Alex. It doesn't appear to be on the site, but I remember it being there a few years ago. I've also seen the Alex at the factory shop in Northampton.

According to my C&J catalogue for 2008/09, the Alex is still available as a "ready to wear" option. However, the catalogue only mentions availability in "mink suede" (which is sort of mid-brown) and "black calf".

If you really like a plain toe, how about a plain-toed monk strap like the Monkton, which is on the 348 last?

Or, you could consider a pair of C&J Tetbury two-eyelet ankle boots, which I think look very elegant. They're also on the 348 last.

If you can, make an effort to try on a shoe in the 348 last before you purchase. People's experiences with shoes on the 348 last seem to differ. Due to the relative narrowness of the last, some people advise to go up half-a-size on the 348 last. However, I'm actually half-a-size smaller in the 348 than I am in other shoes due to the elongated nature of the shoe.

May I politely suggest you re-read my post, I've not said Alex is only available on MTO. Alex and all other styles on the 348 are not part of the Handgrade line.

If you want Hanover which was from the Handgrade C&J will make it for you MTO as it's not a current model.

Actually, iirc, most SF members recommend US size (D width) - 1 for your UK size (E width) on the 348. Imo, much of the 348's narrow appearance is due to its keen chisel toe. It is also slightly elongated as you've mentionned. Also, if you're used to other makers' average F width (Grenson, Sargent, etc), C&J's average E width is narrower; I actually find it is the closest to a true US D width.

Not necessarily answering anyone's question, C&J also make the Scarsdale wholecut on the 358 last, which I am reliably informed is the Handgrade version of the 348. It comes in both chestnut and black - I recently tried the black which was

, but good luck finding it - I've only seen it in 1 store in Europe.

Strange, it's not even listed on the C&J website.

The 358, while chiselled, appears even pointier/narrower than the 348 at its tip.

The 358 is a Handgrade last, however that shoe is not in the UK 2008/09 catalogue.
