It's not recent at all. I have noticed it for at least the past ten years. I like all of my pants to be quite trim, but I can only really find this in jeans. My usual remedy to this problem is to buy (or inherit) clothes that were made at least 30 years ago, when clothes were made as they should.

Man, I'm so behind on trends normally, but I thought I was right on top of this one. I thought they got wide back in like 2000, and were getting slim now.

My take is that 70's pants were flared, 80's pants were slim, 90's were full above and tapered below, then straight, wide, and long in the 2000's. Seems to be a big 80's revival now, at least here in San Francisco.

Doesn't look that gigantic to me:

Giant-fit essential chino
\t$59.50 item 64795
We make our clean-cut chinos with crisp two-ply cotton twill, then wash them lightly so they're laid-back but still refined. Contrast interior piping at waistband. Zip fly. On-seam pockets, back pockets. Import. Machine wash. Catalog/jcrew.com only.

* Giant fit.
* Sits on hips, relaxed through hip and thigh, roomier fit, with a fuller leg.
