Has anyone been to The Metropolitan Opera Live HD screenings?

They're doing Il Barbiere di Seviglia later this month.

What I'm more interested in is whether or not they'll be releasing these on HD-DVD or Blueray any time soon. Does anyone know anything about this?

EDIT: a quick search on DVD empire only brings up stuff from the 90s... Is there that much of a lag-time on this stuff?

DVD or even audio releases of performances, especially in America, are tricky to do because of all the union rules about compensation. I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Good to know, I'm gonna get tickets then. The montreal opera doesn't do nearly as many annual performances as The Met and it would be nice to see more of them. How much do the tickets cost? Same as a movie or more? Btw, don't you live in NY? Why not attend the actual event?

Andrew #2, that really sucks about the unions. I can't think of a better use for high-def than something like this.

Tickets were about double that of aregualr movie, $15, I think. As for attending the Met, you have to pick your shots with good seats going for $500-$750/pair.

This season we opted to hear Netrebko in Puritani and Madame Butterfly, our personal favorite.

Ouch. I figured they were expensive, but didn't think they'd be that much. That's like three shows with the best seats in the house in montreal...

When you say good seats, do you mean the best seats? Are the cheaper seats bad? I'd like to finally get around to going this year. Any info you have would be helpful.

You've got a thing for the old ladies, don't you, Tom? First the acid-washed jeans mom, and now this little comment. :p

That's a beautiful opera house though.
