I just altered my Lands End Harrington jacket, and I have a question for anyone else who has one or has looked closely at the G9, knows the history etc.

I noticed while in there that while there is a rear "vent" across the back, with a flap sewn over, it is not open to the inside, hence can't really ventilate the jacket in hot weather.

Can anyone check whether another/authentic one has this vent open to the inside? I'm part curious, part considering slashing it open. But if it was never done I'll assume there was a good reason and not do it.

Thanks.

just looked at mine and it the vent on the back actually does have openings to the inner of the jacket, so it will do some ventilating. but you can't see the openings from the inside because the lining is covering it.

and the vent is batman shaped so it is sewn down on the points but open in between. IF that makes sense.

on a correct G9, the back vent should be open. On most repro's it closed, a sign of inferiority and just a design detail without function

Yeah, my inferior replica has the batman vent rain cover and a space underneath it that could be open, just not the openings. Can you describe the openings? Are they long slits along the underneath of the flap, or mesh grommets, or what?

Thanks for your help.

Hmm, thank you very much. So the vents go through the lining as well on yours?

Yeah, that means the real ones are made in a somewhat more complicated way with two separate pieces for the back, each with their own lining piece. Someday I'll get an authentic one but for now mine will do all right.

Thanks.

My Merc jacket doesn't even have a vent. Nor was I aware that I should want one. But now I do. Desperately.

Merc so hit or miss...

Good to know - I was interested in whether they had one. Van Heusen as you probably know licensed and produced the G9 (for the US market only, I think) in the 70s-80s, as far as I can tell.

how does the van heusen g9 compare to the UK baracuta g9?
the sizing similar?
any marked difference in quality?
